WIDOW OF EIGHTY-NINE YEARS

Dies at the Age of 110

The death is announced on April 4 of the oldest woman in the United Kingdom - PEGGY McGURK, of Carrickmore, Co. Tyrone – at the age of 110. In November last she received a postal order from the King’s private secretary, accompanied by a letter conveying his Majesty’s congratulations on her attainment of such a great age. Although known by the name of McGurk, her correct name by marriage was Hodgkins. But her married life was so brief – only about three months - that her neighbours never got out of the habit of calling her by her maiden name. Though bent with age, she was remarkably hardy and active, and until a few years ago used to go about in her feet in summer time. Up to the time of her death she held the post of keeper of the local courthouse, though the duties had latterly been performed by a deputy.
