On the 18th inst., at his residence, Portstewart, county Londonderry, Colonel John Elliot Cairnes, K.H., J.P., aged 61 years. He entered the army at the age of 18 years, and served with distinction in the Travancore war, in 1809; in Java, in 1811, including the storming of Cornelis; and also in the Deccan war - which services were recognised by the Government, who conferred on him the order of Knight of Hanover. For many years he has resided in Portstewart, his remains were interred in Agherton churchyard, on Monday, the 22nd inst.

At her house, in Ballymaclary, in Magilligan, in the 58th year of her age, on Thursday, the wife of Mr. William Campbell, daughter of Dr. Church. In early life she was attacked by a ferocious band of ruffians in the house of her aunt Mrs. Cust. These ruffians had

committed great depredations in that part of the country with impunity for a considerable time. Upon subsequent apprehension and trial she had identified one of the ruffians who was later executed, this broke up the band of robbers.

On Friday, the 6th inst., an inquest was held in Coruddie, in the parish of Dungiven, before William Lane, Esq., M.D., coroner, on the body of John Candon, who died on the 4th inst. It appeared from the evidence given that four men and one woman by the name of Cromie, a man named Patrick McCloskey, and two others, had, on the evening of the 13th ult., been drinking in Candon's, on their return from Maghera. A dispute having arisen, owing to Candon's spilling some whiskey, they commenced fighting, when Candon received injuries from which he did not recover and died on the 4th inst. A very respectable jury, mostly from Dungiven, by their verdict found James, Edward and John Cromie, with Patrick McCloskey, guilty of manslaughter.

On Thursday last two sons of Mr David Patton, of this City, went on a shooting excursion in a boat down Lough Foyle to a bank called Shell Island. They were accompanied by two men named Clarke and Thompson, of Culmore. About 3.30 pm., they got into trouble,

the boat overturned, only Thompson and the elder son survived. The bodies of the younger Patton son, aged 17 years, and Clarke, who has left a wife and two young children, were recovered on Friday morning.

On Monday, the 7th inst., an inquest was held by the Coroner, Mr. Daniel Gailey, of Coleraine, in the graveyard of Macosquin, on the body of a man named Hanam Curry. He had lived in Ballinteer, and while in a feverish delirium, had cut his throat, the attending doctor had closed the wound, but the unfortunate man had tore it open, and died shortly afterward. His friends interred him in Macosquin graveyard on Thursday week, but in the ground of another person, so he was disinterred and buried in another part of the yard. As the coronor had no notice of his death, the body had to be yet again disinterred, for the inquest, whence a verdict of suicide while in a state of delirium was given. He was then interred in a third grave, in another part of the yard.
